As I work to foster your child's sense of responsibility, I
insist that students return homework on time. Grades reflect homework
assignments, class-work, examinations and observations. Late work is
penalized with a lower grade. If the assignment affects a group of students the
penalty may be more severe. We correct most assignments as a class but
there are several that will be turned in by students and checked by me.
Assignments that are not turned in receive a zero.
SPELLING HOMEWORK:
Spelling Weekly unit assigned and completed independently as homework: test Friday
As with all assignments, carefully reading the directions is crucial. Whenever a new,
potentially difficult concept appears within the spelling text, I discuss it with the class and
we tackle a few problems together. Each unit contains four pages of spelling reinforcement,
which allow students to problem solve and improve their handwriting ability as they carefully
form each letter. Students have been reminded that this is "spelling"; therefore,
misspellings are counted as incorrect answers. Furthermore, continually misspelling a word
may cause your child to internalize the incorrect spelling. A student's final spelling grade will
reflect tests, workbook pages and his/her regular usage (i.e. work in other subjects). I
subtract the number wrong on workbook pages from the test score to arrive at that week's spelling score.
HOMEWORK AND CLASSWORK EXPECTATIONS:
Student is responsible for recording homework in assignment book (I do not check each student's book). I do verbally list items students will need
to take home each night by reviewing the assignments listed on the board as we prepare for
dismissal. High quality work: checking work carefully, neat appearance, and proper cursive Students will be expected to complete each assignment by the due date. Work should be completed in cursive, erasable pen. Math is always in pencil. Remain on task and focus on your own work Take risks; "A mistake is a chance to try harder".
